Mary Virginia Coffman

MSW, MS, CNS

An  evidence-based  path  to  Balance  and  self  harmony

I earned a Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health (MSNIH) at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), a regionally accredited university in Laurel, Maryland. There, I studied the complex nature of biochemical and physiological interactions between the human body, nutrients, and the natural world. What we eat and the therapeutic use of nutrients can balance our nervous systems, hormones, and immune response. These can even influence the expression of our genes to lower the risk of disease.

My studies also provided me with a rich understanding of lifestyle factors in our physical wellbeing and resilience, such as stress, sleep, social interaction, exposure to the natural world, and movement. Beyond food and nutrition, I train my clients to transform their health using mindfulness, heart centered meditation, sleep strategies, time in nature, and joyful movement. The foundational principles of mindful awareness and nutrition allow individuals to build self-efficacy and shape their own unique path toward holistic wellness.

My practice is a weight neutral practice. Research on weight loss diets richly describes that weight does not correspond to health. Diet culture leads to self-distrust, weight increases, and a disconnect from one's own body. My work focuses on building trust via awareness and intuition, the wisdom of the body, and cultivating the space between trigger and response. In that space we may make choices that bring us peace and satisfaction. True health promoting behaviors will lead us into feeling whole and well.

I have been personally inspired by the best of my professors, and by the works of William J. Walsh, PhD, James Greenblatt, MD, Trudy Scott, CN, Julia Ross, MA, Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, CNS, CHN, Peter Bongiorno, ND, Mahan and Raymond (Krause and the Nutrition Care Process), Dr. Stephen Porges, Stanley Rosenberg, Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S and Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S, Figedp, FADA, FAND and others.

Education: Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health, Maryland University of Integrative Health; Master of Social Work, University of Michigan; BA in English, Princeton University.

In September 2020 I was awarded the Certified Nutrition Specialist
® (CNS) designation after 1000+ hours of supervised clinical practice and passing a rigorous board exam required by the Board of Certified Nutrition Specialists at the American Nutrition Association. The Clinician's Incubator provided my supervision.

  • To maintain appropriate and professional relationship boundaries with my clients.
  • To be conscious of my client’s comfort and goals at each step of the nutrition care process.

Description of Graduate Studies
Maryland University of Integrative Health
Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health

Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) provides an evidence-based program of scientific study in functional nutrition and holistic healing in the Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health (MSNIH). Functional nutrition recognizes the interconnected nature of molecules and cells through systems and the human organism. It identifies the root biochemical and physiological causes of disease. MUIH’s holistic integrative approach also values and explores the intertwined contributions of stress, sleep, exercise, mindfulness, environment, genetics, and human relationship to health and wellness. Students delve into the mind-body connection and traditional holistic healing modalities.
